A Trio of Reader’s Theater
Directed by Margaret Crowell

The Readers Theatre Workshop from last May produced exciting new talent that we will showcase performing a trio of short plays: “There Will Come Soft Rains,” by Ray Bradbury; “A Gift for Mr. Lincoln,” by Treasa Thomas, and “The Courtship of Arthur and Al,” by James Thurber. A quality season starter.

Scary Halloween Stories
Directed by Brad Nygren

Be scared, entertained, and get in the mood for Halloween! Come hear the season’s favorite tales read by premier Babcock Readers who join David Bullock and members of the Utah Storyteller’s Guild. The spine chilling “Tell-Tale Heart,” by Edgar Allen Poe, read by Michael Bennett, will headline the evening’s selections.

Wilderness Quilt
Directed by Gloria Gardner Murdock

Just over 100 years ago, “Wilderness Warrior” Theodore Roosevelt set aside the Grand Canyon, and much else, for conservation. Last year, Women Protecting Wilderness created an ever-growing “quilt” of testimonials celebrating the lifeline between people and Utah's wild lands. Hear and see the Wilderness Quilt come to life on stage, and take a trip down Utah's own pioneer lifeline: City Creek, in its eventual flow to the Great Salt Lake.

The holidays are coming and with them all those memories and feelings. What are yours? Feel inspired to enter the BPR Short Story/One Act Play Contest. We will award cash prizes and perform winning entries in an evening of nostalgia and holiday cheer. So start writing and submit your entry by November 1, 2009. Each of the three acts will feature a fresh cast so many readers may participate.

Babcock Performing Readers in cooperation with Walk-ons Inc. is proud to present an evening of four short plays by, for, and about seniors. They feature prize winning playwright Elaine Jarvik, winner of the 2007 Amana Play Festival short play competition in Louisville, Kentucky. Performers include Jayne Luke, founder of Walk-ons Inc., Steve Phillips, and Ron Frederickson.

Salt Lake's urbane Pinnacle Acting Company will do a staged reading of “Visitor from Hollywood,” (part two of Neil Simon's Plaza Suite). The performance will feature Pinnacle founders Melanie Nelson & Jared Larkin in this hilarious one-act play about the futile efforts of movie producer Jesse Kiplinger (Jared) to seduce Muriel Tate (Melanie) his old high school sweetheart.

Come find your relatives, friends, and even yourself in these insightful funny tales.

Rather than food, members bring a short poem or prose piece, original or by a favored author, to read before an appreciative audience. This evening is a perennial favorite. At this event talent is discovered and shared, so leave shyness at home and become a star. Every member is eligible and there may be a surprise or two as planned by our host. Keep your piece to five minutes or less.
